Both are used and even RHUD, an American dictionary, accepts both. There seems to be a tendency among native speakers of English to use the singular of quite a few currencies as the plural, especially collectively. I have heard a British minister use pound in a sentence like this on TV: I

My paternal grandfather, a New England Yankee farmer, used the singular exclusively.
My mother wouldn't dream of it!

Nevertheless, no one would argue that we should say "a ten feet pole," or "a ten pounds sledge."
