Can we omit "the fact" before "that" ?

I saw this kind of sentence in a book:

One survey result showed is the fact that the number of single people has increased over the past few decades.


In this case, can we omit "the fact"? below is the new sentence:

One survey result showed is that the number of single people has increased over the past few decades.

Does this sentence make sense? And is this sentence also grammatically correct?
