Can we keep a name?

Is this sentence correct??

" A nickname is a name kept by family, friends or well-wishers on the basis of name, character ....... "

Is it correct to KEEP a name ?

Can we keep a name, that is, Instead of using the verb "to name" can we use the verb "keep" followed by " a name "

Not in the kind of way you were talking about in your first post.

But you could say

eg Tom though about changing his name to Fred. But Tom decided to keep his name.

Just as a footnote

In the last example, Clive says that Tom decides to keep his name rather than change it and this is correct. If you want to change your name from Tom to Fred then you can do so. You are the keeper of your own name

However, there is a special sense in which you cannot change your nickname. You cannot say to people: 'Please can you call me "spike"
