Can u elaborate this sentence?""and was quite surprised at the burst of indignation which this novel method of returning a favor drew from us"

Hi friends

I come across with a sentence in a story which I couldn't understand the meaning.what's the meaning of this sentence "and was quite surprised at the burst of indignation which this novel method of returning a favor drew from us." in the following sentence?

" he was in favor of tying the young Indian to a tree and giving him a sound lashing, and was quite surprised at the burst of indignation which this novel method of returning a favor drew from us."

Top answer

We were shocked by his idea of tying the young Indian to a tree and whipping him. The young Indian was doing a favor - was this a "new way" to reward someone? But he was suprised by our reaction.

You may need to back up a bit in context to reveal how the "sound lashing" is to be considered the return of a favor.

Who is "us"? What was the favor, and to whom was it returned?
