Can this....

Can "for themselves" have the same meaning as "by themselves" I mean, can "for oneself" be used as a meaning of "without anyone's help"? Thanks in advance.

by myself = I alone; for myself = for my benefit. The latter might be used by some to mean the former, but I don't think it sounds very good in that sense.
