Apple tastes bad.

Apples taste bad.

Top answer

The first sentence needs "this, the" at the beginning. No, they aren't quite the same in meaning. The first refers to a particular apple; the second refers to apples in general.

If you put 'the' in front of the second sentence it would apply to a particular consignment of apples.

I've just been to the greengrocer's and bought some fruit. The oranges and really juicy, but the apples taste bad.
