Can someone translate this??

Can someone tell me what this means:

Josh Oszersky(1996) argues that “the fundamentally hopeless” picture The Simpsons presents “commits us to a shared vision of pessimism and self-deprecation.”


Its saying that The Simpsons does something to us.. and that something I do not understand.
