Beauty is only Skin deep
Most fairy tales have happy endings, and almost everybody enjoys happy endings. But have you ever thought about the message behind the fairy tale? Or are all fairy tales meant for entertainment?

It also states that they “Were teachings of good versus evil or moral integrity used in ways to keep the children interested in the history of their people and the moral ways to live." In order for fairy tales to teach those things they use symbols and universal types to get their messages across. In “Beauty and the Beast” the message is that beauty is not found on the outside but the inside.

Le Prince created works of fiction and nonfiction, and educational journals for children. She is well known today for her popular children tales, “Beauty and the Beast” being one of them. There are many different versions of “Beauty and the Beast” but the most popular versions are created by Disney, and Grimm Brothers.
The fairy tale is about a Prince named Adam one night he was greeted at his door by an old ugly lady seeking shelter form the cold winter wind. Adam a selfish prince with no love in his heart but for himself turned the helpless old withered woman away. The old lady turned around and gave the Prince the most beautiful rose he had ever seen. The Prince grabbed the rose from the old lady who transformed into a beautiful Enchantress, as the Prince touched the rose, and became a hideous beast. The Enchantress told him he would return to his human form if he found love with a person that loved him back before the last magical rose petal died. Years later the beast imprison an inventor the father of a beautiful girl named Belle after he became lost in the woods. Belle finds her father trapped in the castle and offers to take his place. The Beast accepts with a promise that she will remain in the castle forever. In the beginning Belle sees the beast as nothing more than a monster and he sees her as difficult and stubborn. Belle and Prince Adam the beast fall in love. The beast returns to his human self and he and Belle lived happily ever after. The end
However, is that really the end of the fairy tale? “Beauty and the Beast” has many symbols to help carry the message that the fairy tale portrays. The first symbol in this tale would be the woods. Woods are intimidating and scary, like the ones portrayed in the tale. But deep down in the woods was a beautiful castle. The woods surrounded the castle and kept it hidden from others. One will never know what is on the inside of the woods until they looked. The woods symbolized what one sees from the outside, while on the inside something great lies within. Showing you cannot judge a book by its cover.
The castle itself symbolizes strength and authority. They are made of stone and brick which are hard and powerful. Also symbolizing that the outside appearance can make anyone wrongfully judge what is really on the inside. Once you take a look on the inside you will see that the castle not only gave the impression of hardness and strength it also was lively and bright inside decorated with many beautiful animated treasures, and things. The treasure and things showed that beauty is found everywhere.
In this fairy tale there are two universal types one being Beauty. She was an example of stereotypical people when she assumed that the beast was nothing more than an angry monster. Once she realized that the beast was much more than what she thought him to be, she quickly fell in love. Beauty helps us to see that one should never assume someone’s character because of the way they look. Empathetic people can be showed by Beauty an example being when she chose to take her father place in the castle.
In "Beauty and the Beast" the old lady helps us to see that people don't appear as they seems. Since the old lady was haggard looking the prince turned her away, he was judging her on her appearance. Once the old lady turn into a beautiful Enchantress the prince quickly changed his mind. People judge people on the way they look. But when you judge somebody on theirs looks you will never truly get to know that person. Looks can be deceiving, and cause us to to quickly misjudge. The old lady is an another example of you cant judge a book by its cover.
When you think of a beast you think of someone who is stubborn, mean, angry, and unlovable. But the beast was so much more than that since he was changed into a beast he have had time to realize that love can change any and everything. So therefore the beast heart had softened, and he was capable of loving. The beast outwards appearances cause Beauty to misjudge him, and his characteristics. But once they got to know each other they realized they were wrong about each other. That is why you should never base someone on their looks.
The lessons of The Beauty and the Beast are everywhere in this fairy tale. Love transforms everything, elevates everything. The message that Beauty and the Beast portray that beauty is not found on the outside but the inside. Beauty and the Beast helps us to see that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. If we can transform everything around us, even the fundamental perceptions of the people closest to us we can see that love conquers all, love changes all, love makes all things possible.
