To Greenheart Travel, Georgia Program,

As a passionate, open minded and tolerant to other cultures young man who has just completed a 120 hour TEFL certificate and is taking a break from my university studies, I am seeking to travel overseas and teach English to students who really need it, to students who may not have access to proper English teachers and to students who have a desire to learn English to improve their job prospects. I hope to gain valuable experience from this so I can come back to Australia refreshed and ready to study again, knowing that I have made a difference in my life and the life of others and hoping to take that back to Australia and spreading the news and/or encouraging myself to go and help others in other parts of the world.

I have learnt that many developing countries around the world are eager to have all or most of their students learn English to help them develop so as when they finish schooling it will help them perhaps find a job in the tourism and/or business industry or perhaps look to go overseas where their language might not be widely used. So why have I decided to choose Georgia? Well, I really wanted to take the opportunity to explore a different culture to my own, Australian or western culture and to my own background, Indonesian culture. I am an Australian-born Indonesian, born in Australia but my parents are from Indonesia, I have been to Indonesia several times on holidays to see family and have seen the culture at first hand. I do enjoy the Indonesian way of life and have a feeling that Georgians may have a relatively similar way of life. The cost of living is probably the same in Indonesia as it is in Georgia and living conditions are probably similar, I often stay at my grandparents’ house who live like the average Indonesian, places where there are open sewers, wild dogs and cats roaming the road, non-air-conditioned public transport like mini buses, like Marshutkas in Georgia I guess, that drive all over the road and blackouts that happen at least once a day. These things make the Indonesian life exciting and the culture shock that you get from a western country like Australia amazes me. I embrace the culture differences and respect them. I engage myself with their culture differences, for example earlier this year I went to Indonesia and attended an Indonesian wedding; it was very different to anything I have seen. It went for 10 hours spread over two days, there was a lot of talking in a language I could not understand, as they spoke in a dialect, that is not similar to Indonesian, and dancing that was too slow to understand what was going on.

Therefore I would suspect to be calm and content if I was to travel to Georgia and live like the average Georgian, however, culture-wise the Indonesian culture is most likely different to the Georgian culture and I would love to experience the different cultures. It’s most likely different because Indonesia is a highly Muslim dominate country while Georgia is a highly Christian dominate country and Indonesia follows South-East Asian cultures and Georgia follows Eastern European cultures and therefore there will be numerous differences in culture that I would love to enjoy and embrace.

I am the very few Australians who enjoy other people’s cultures and languages that I am able to speak three or four languages and would like to expand on this, while helping others with their English. The four languages I can speak are English, French and Indonesian/Malay, Indonesian and Malay are similar languages.

Having said my interests of Georgia, where else have I travelled to? Well, I have done a lot of travelling as a 21 year old. I suspect I have gone overseas around at least more than 5 times, to around 3 different countries. I have been to Indonesia 5 times, including the beautiful Bali, to Malaysia once and to mesmerizing France once. I have stopped over at Dubai, Qatar, and Singapore as a transit to the next destination, having said that, I have exited the Singaporean airport to see the beautiful and clean garden city of Singapore, it was amazing. I too have travelled all over Australia only missing around 2 capital cities.

Have I ever worked as a teacher? Unfortunately, no I have not, but I am the type of person who loves helping others, and finds that the best way to learn is to teach others. I have however private tutored university students individually with statistics. I did do volunteering training for people who spoke English as a second language, but it did not continue as the centre could not find me a person to work with which was a shame as I was really enjoying the training and could not wait to find out who I was going to support and take a journey to help them with their English.

I love children and I love other cultures. I also love helping others with their problems and ensuring they understand what I have told them to fix their problems. I believe that my skills and personality and my love for different cultures and the help of others are what you are looking for. Thank you for allowing me to take up this opportunity and I do hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,

Stephen XXXXX
