The Indianapolis Children's Museum is located at 3000 North Meridian Street, just north of

downtown Indianapolis Indiana. The Indianapolis Children's Museum is over 472,000 square

foot stretched across 13 miles, making the Indianapolis Children's museum the largest in the

world. The museum opened its doors in 1925, and since then has upgraded to a larger

location. The current building was built in 1976 and has been expanding ever since. The

Indianapolis Children's Museum provides an extraordinary learning experience for children.

This institution is full of colorful and creative exhibits to trigger a child's imagination and to

encourage a hands on learning experience.

Once you enter the Indianapolis Children's Museum, the learning experience begins. The

museum consists of 5 levels connected by an enormous spiral ramp. In the middle of the ramp

is a 4 story glass sculpture, bursting with many colors, known as; “Fireworks of Glass”. Each

level consists of multiple exhibits. The exhibits are categorized to target specific age groups,

while all ages are invited to each. One example is the “Dinosphere” exhibit. The section,

“Now You're in Their World”, is a location inside of Dinosphere targeted to reach grades K-

2. The lesson focuses on how dinosaurs names reflect their body parts. Children can take

measurements, draw, and construct models of dinosaurs. Another section called ,“Bringing

Dinosaurs to Life” targets grades 3-5. Children can dig to find hidden fossils. Children will be

able to hold and study the fossils. The next section, “Lab”, is targeted for children in grades 6-

8. Children will use computers to get in-depth dinosaur information. Another exhibit, “The

Power of Change”, has different sections based on age levels. The Ryan White-”Facing

Discrimination, Finding Determination” section is targeted for grades 6-8. Children will learn the

story of Ryan White by watching a movie based on his life, inside a reconstruction of his

bedroom. Children can view artifacts, such as Ryan Whites original locker. Anne Frank-”

Facing Hatred, Daring to dream”, is another section inside of this exhibit. Children will

learn the struggle of the 13 year old Dutch-Jewish girl that was forced into hiding for 25 months

during the holocaust. On display are historical artifacts from World War Two, such as: the

yellow stars worn by Jews, and a replica of Anne Frank's diary.

Next there is “Info Zone”. The Indianapolis Children's Museum powered up with the

Indianapolis Marion County Public Library to create vast resources and provide a child friendly

library inside of the Indianapolis Children's Museum. Info-Zone provides activities that are

experience based such as:Bunny Book Bags and a magnetic activity wall for pre-readers. The

library offers a variety of books, Cd's, and learning kits for children of all ages. Info Zone

encourages families to learn together.

Finally, the Indianapolis Children's Museum has two “free with admission” theaters that

provide an extraordinary experience for children. The “Space Quest Planetarium”, is a fully

domed planetarium. There are three different scheduled shows that play every day..

Each are focused to teach children about Space. The first show is “Cosmic Canopy”. This

show teaches children ages 5 and up the names of the stars and how to find them. The second

show is “Wonders of the Universe”. This show is designed for ages 8 and up. In just 20

minutes children will witness the birth of the Universe billions of years ago. They will be

able to see the formation of galaxies. The third show is “One World One Sky”. This show is

ideal for preschoolers. Children will discover the Sun, Moon, and Stars with the help of Elmo

and friends. They will learn that the Moon is very different from Earth. The second theater is

the “Lilly Theater”. The Lilly theater provides live performances and musicals. The

performances are 40 minutes long and are recommended for children ages 4 and up.

Scheduled to play this month is the musical, “Snoopy”. Snoopy and his friends will tell an

educational story while adding comedy.

With the Children's Museum housing over 100,000 artifacts, it is no surprise that there

are over One Million visitors each year. It is obvious that it is quite impossible to see every

artifact in one visit to the Indianapolis Children's Museum. So every visit is a new adventure

and a new learning experience for children and adults as well. Visiting the Indianapolis

Children's Museum is an excellent reason to get your whole family together. The Indianapolis

Childrens Museum is where play inspires lifelong learning.
