Family is an emotional connection that enriches ones life; bringing love and security. The simplicity of company; never feeling alone in the world. The connection empowers us to accept the faults of others with no judgment. The people we can count on the most when everything else fails. Those are the words that I believe describe family. According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, family is described as a group of individuals living under one roof and usually under one head.

There are many different types of family, neither of them being the “correct” way. I myself have a few different types of family. I have the one I live with, my siblings and parents, long distance relations, and my friends. My long distance relatives are those who have seen me grow up, are blood, and know little details about my life. That type of family you see every holiday, but never see other than that. My friends that I consider family have grown up with me, know every aspect of my life, and are those I confide my insecurities in.

The types of family we are nurtured by have began to change. A nuclear family consists of a man, a woman, and usually children. Those whom are Divorce is starting to become more common. As a result a child may have their family split in two. Same sex partnerships are two individuals who have brought children from a previous marriage or have chosen adoption. In our world we also have grandparents, cousins, aunts, siblings, and so forth taking in families children and raising them as their own. As for those whom do not have any blood line as a result of misfortune, in order to gain the family everyone craves, they accept non blood relation as family. Richard Bach quotes “The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each others life”. A family can go beyond those who live together. For example, A football team is a family; they must overcome obstacles to score a touchdown. Each person has their own duty to ensure the play they are running.

Our view of family has expanded beyond blood relation into other aspects of life. Family is about being able to feel comfort, love, and acceptance. They will love you no matter what and try not to judge you for the things you do. Quoted by Jane Howard “Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it family. Whatever you call it, whoever you are, you need one.”
