As we all know women today are different compared to the women on the old day. Women on the old day don’t have the right or freedom to do anything without their husband permission. Base on the story writing by Marilyn Yalom andFatima Mernissi they have similar to each one another. They wrote about the married women and want to free from the household works. These stories talks about the stereotypes of the women and the conception of what it is to be married women. Marilyn Yalom essay is talks about the America women society today compared to the old day. While Fatima Mernissi essay is talks about the life is in a harem. The story is base on her mother want the freedom to choose to live on her life. The Myth of the Latin Woman”, by Judith Ortiz Cofer, talks about the problem of the Latin women base on the stereotypes gives by the society. Meanwhile the story “girl”, by Jamaica Kincaid, is kind of similar to above essays that are described. Since her mom teaches her how to do the right thing when she become a woman and has the family in the future. That’s one reason of the mother wanted their daughter to be happy and have a freedom.
In the essay “The Wife Today”, by Marilyn Yalom, she talks about the history of women and their role in society. Yalom states how the changes role of married women from ancient times to the present. How the stereotypes of being married women? How the concept of what it is to be a wife? Yalom’s essay makes it clear to the reader that married women have the good reason to think what marriage will mean to her. Her points in this essay it to raise women awareness to choose wifehood. Wives today it no longer imply dependent on their partner. That’s one reason why women today want to work outside of the house. Back on the old day the society, women expected to stay home to take care the kids but that idea is no longer significant today. She write “bargaining power” in the essay is mean the more money bring by the spouse, the more power they have over their partner. That is also one reason why many couple fights over it and divorce later. Base on I hear from my mom most of the women in my country Vietnam are dependent on their husband. They husband work and provide the expensive at home while the wives just stay home and take good care the children. Back on the old day, they say most women not important to have education because it will not use their knowledge when they are married but today is different compared to the old day. If the wives have the high education they will have equal opportunity as men had. She states women tend to work in order to have financial due to possibility of divorce. That’s why most couple has separated account in their bank. Yalom also says today young people have in several relationships before falling in love with one of them. She believes “love” is the strongest basic to grow in relationship of married.
The essay “Moonlit Night of Laughter”, by Fatima Mernissi, she describes what it life like to be raised in a harem. She talks about her mother wanted to be out of the harem tradition. Mernissi’s mom is an iconoclast, she want to challenge and flight for the freedom of harem tradition life. Her mom wanted to live alone with her husband and the kids. She is getting tired of living in harem tradition role. The things she hate the most is to wake up early to prepare the foods to the whole family. Sometimes Mernissi’s mom skips the meal because she wants to annoy the husband. That situation is happen to my mom since she just married to my dad. She need to wake up early and prepare breakfast and lunch for the whole family and she always the last one who left on the table because she server the food for them. Sometimes she can’t eat because there were no more food left for her when she done server to the family. In other hand, the story talks about the mother want her daughter to be happiness and freedom. Mernissi’s mom states “one hundred percent happiness” (page 87) it means one should not live in a Harem and not allow other to principle one’s choices. She doesn’t want her daughter to be like her was not free from the household chore and want her to live in her own way not on Harem tradition.
In the essay “The Myth of the Latin Woman”, by Judith Ortiz Cofer, she describes how various people treated her as a Latin woman. Is also talks about a Latin woman to overcome the various stereotypes that give to her by society. Stereotypes by definition are Initial predictions about strangers based on incomplete information about their culture, race, religion, or ethnicity. Through her childhood life, she was kept under strict and was trained to behave like to wear proper. She states that she learned to dress traditionally from her mother. She states that Americans make hasty and unfair judgments base on the way of Latin dress. People in the America think that Latin girl is showing off their skin because of the dress they wear. She cites some common incident that happened to her and other Latino, because of the stereotypes America has against Hispanic women. When Latin women wear a colorful clothes and a lot of jewelry and show some skin that gives America men a wrong message. They think Latin women are easy to get with. The author had experience of that situation when growing up in America because of the stereotypes people against of Hispanic women. I think people should not judge other people because of the way they dress. We all know that most of the countries have different culture and tradition. They just follow the way of their culture. Every one of us is free to act the way we wanted ,so others should not interfere with that.
The story “girl”, by Jamaica Kincaid, is a dialogue of a mother who gives advice to the young girl about of life. She educates and encourages her daughter how to eat, wear clothes and talk in a good way. The point of this essay, this to teach the young girl to behave properly and not act to not be called a "slut”. She teach her step by step to become “proper” way. Like "Wash the clothes on Monday and put them on the stone heap; wash the color clothes on Tuesday and put them on the clothesline to dry”. She want her daughter to be polite and good manner when she growing up. In order to suppose her place in society, the must learn those things to maintain that societal role. There are many things a girl must learn when she is become a woman. We all know most of the mothers train their daughter in a good proper way for them to act in their future family love. I had overcome that situation too when I still young. My mom trains me and educated me how to do the household chores. Like Kincaid mom, most of the mothers out there want to gives their daughter advice how to deal the hardship in their future life and preparing themselves ready for the new world.
In conclusion, each author writes the story base on their own experiences. Marilyn Yalom essay is base on the women today; want to work outside the house not to stay at home to take care the kid. About Fatima Mernissi story is her mother want to be free from the Harem tradition life and wanted to live alone with her husband and kids. She also wants her daughter to live one hundred percent of happiness; it means to move out the Harem. While Judith Ortiz Cofer and Jamaica Kincaid, describing the way their mother teaches them how to dress proper.
