"I appreciate God giving me life." I am trying to explain this sentence to a person whose first language is Korean. First of all, is this a simple sentence? Second of all, is God giving me life an object phrase or something like that? Is giving even a verb in this sentence? I thought that in order for an -ing verb to be a verb, it would have to have an auxillary verb attached. Is the "to be" verb implied here? Any help is appreciated. Thank you

No. Simple sentences have only one clause.
The whole sentence is one clause and *** giving me life is another clause. The first clause is a finite clause. The finite verb form is 'appreciate'. The second clause is a non-finite clause. The non-finite verb form is 'giving'.
giving here is a gerund, which means that it is the noun-like form of th verb.
