Many manufactured food and drink products contain high levels of sugar, which causes many health problems. Sugary products should be made more expensive to encourage people to consume less sugar.
Do you agree or disagree?
Sugar is considered as addictive as cocaine, which gradually destroys our health, so one might argue that manufacturers should increase the price of sweet products in order to restrict purchasing and taking sugar. From my perspective, this measure is ineffective.
To commence with, lots of research has proved that sugar is the reason for lots of extreme diseases. Excess sugar is in charge of obesity, diabetes type 2, cardiovascular or more seriously, increasing risk of Alzheimer’s disease. As a result, people are encouraged to reduce consuming sugar by making sugary products more expensive. There is no point in only focusing on producers' responsibilities while the initial problem comes from the customers who consume sugary aliments. As people can not resist the temptation of sweet things, they will keep purchasing such unhealthy nourishment. In addition, rising prices mean that sweet producers will receive more income, and they can use that revenue to make more advertisements to attract more customers to their aliments.
Take the tobacco industry as an example. Although cigarettes are heavily taxed by the government, the number of its customers does not seem to significantly be reduced, since they are still addicted to nicotine. So does sugar. Consuming sweet things helps the human body release dopamine, making people addicted. If they don't change their mind, nothing can force them to stop eating or drinking, even the price. Therefore, the most efficient solution to help people reduce their intake of sugar is to help them realise the disadvantages of sweets through the press, magazines, TV and the Internet.
With all mentioned above, I am convinced that the rising price of sugary products can not limit people consuming sugar.
