Can someone look this over, please, and thank you!

The late 1970s’ was a time when New Yorkers were in shock and fear. Of who, you may ask, and the answer is David Berkowitz. Yes, David Berkowitz is his real name, but he is best known as the “Forty-four Caliber Killer” or simply as the “Son of Sam”. David Berkowitz is one of the most notorious serial killers of all time. He killed six people, wounded many more, and from 1976 until 1977, David Berkowitz’s murders terrorized New York City; leaving thousands afraid to leave their homes, fall asleep, and being by themselves; especially at night. David Berkowitz stalked the streets of New York City for years, preying on young, beautiful attractive woman especially brunettes and blondes, claiming that he was told to kill by a demon who was possessed his neighbor's dog. David Berkowitz’s crimes became legendary, because of the bizarre letters that he wrote to police. In one of his letters, Berkowitz stated that his evil father “Sam” urged him to kill and that he will kill again.

I am deeply hurt by your calling me a woman hater. I am not. But I am a monster. I am the 'Son of Sam”. When father Sam gets drunk he gets mean. He beats his family. Sometimes he ties me up to the back of the house. Other times he locks me in the garage. Sam loves to drink blood. 'Go out and kill,' commands father Sam. The note eerily concluded with these words: "I'll be back, I'll be back! To be interpreted as - bang, bang, bang - ugh! "Yours in murder- Mr. Monster". (Abrahamsen 1)

Looking backs at his life before the murders, I can say that David Berkowitz truly had a very difficult life. He was ridiculed, insulted, teased, laughed at, and make fun of. However, does that give him a right to go out and kill people? Now, the question that is still unanswered is: why did David Berkowitz commit the murders? His childhood experiences, the murders, and the aftermath of David Berkowitz’s killings show that the life of David Berkowitz has been exceedingly strange since the day of his birth and undoubtedly will continue until the day he dies.

I've made a few suggestions:

The late 1970s’ (no apostrophe) was a time when New Yorkers were in shock and fear. Of who (use "what" here), (no comma) you may ask, and the answer is David Berkowitz. Yes, David Berkowitz is his real name, but he is best known as the “Forty-four Caliber Killer” or simply as the “Son of Sam”. David Berkowitz is one of the most notorious

Just a note that having lived in suburban New York in that time, I never heard him called The Forty-Four Caliber Killer."

"Beautiful, attractive" is a bit redundant. He killed quite a few men in the company of women (perhaps his real targets).

Why did he commit the murders? Of course that's been answered -- he was a psychopath!
