Can someone help me with the meaning of this sentence?

Hi. I have been studying a portrait of George Washingtone and I faced with a sentence. This is the sentence: " The consequence was that he often failed in the field but never failed against an enemy that was encamped." Can someone help me with the meaning of this sentence? Thank you

Fighting out in the fields was not his strong point. He was more successful when he attacked the enemy while they were unprepared for fighting (eating lunch, sleeping, etc.). [Seems this might be true of anyone at war (?)]
