Letter Writing

Can someone help me correct my motivation letter?

Dear NEO of Portugal,

My name is xx, I am 21 years old and a fourth year medical student from Colombia, I started my clinical training two years ago and I have passed the internal medicine, psychiatry, surgery and community medicine courses, by the time of the exchange I will had taken the pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology courses as well.

I decided to apply for a four weeks professional exchange in Portugal because it has always been a dream of mine to learn about different cultures and different approaches to medicine. I think Portugal would provide me with the opportunity to do both since it’s a country where both classic and modern elements coexist in a beautiful way, as it can be seen in its architecture, language, music, among others. Moreover, as a developed country, Portugal has a more organized health care system that provides universal coverage and focuses greatly on primary health care, I would love to be able to learn from this and take this experience and new ideas to my own country.

Ever since I started my clinical education I was interested in learning about family medicine and I felt it could be the medical specialty I would want in the future, however my university doesn´t offer this course that I think is absolutely necessary since it provides a holistic and human approach to the patients and helps specialties like gynecology, pediatrics, internal medicine and psychiatry come together.

I study at xx, which is a university that makes emphasis on community medicine, prevention of diseases and health promotion, which I think are important for family medicine and all medical specialties, being a fourth year student I have already passed 7 community medicine courses, they have really helped me improve my communication skills, see patients as real people with real problems and they have also opened my eyes to the condition in which most people in my country live. However, after going from theory to practice, it was obvious that what we learn in classes is sometimes impossible to do with communities because the country’s health care system is not pointing in this direction. Even if it looks like a difficult environment for family medicine to take action, I believe in the future our health care system will be oriented towards an integral view of patients and primary health care taking the example of developed countries like Portugal.

I am really looking forward to being able to go to a different country and I think it is an opportunity many medical students do not have, which is why I would want to make the most of it. I expect to learn a lot about family medicine, practice my English, get a lot better at speaking Portuguese and especially meeting new people that can teach me new things and help me grow as a person.

Yours sincerely,
