The table illustrates the number of hectares of forested areas in six continents of the world between1990 and 2005.
Overall, it is clear that while Europe had the largest number of forest area, Oceania had the smallest figure over a fifteen-year period from 1990 to 2005.
To begin with, during the period, Europe held the first position with regard to the number of hectares of forested land, with 989 million hectares in 1990 and the figured increased slightly to 1001 in 2005. Asia also witnessed a marginal rise between 1990 and 2005, rose from 576 to 584 milliion hectares.
South America and Africa ranked second and third in terms of the number of hectares in 1990 but the figures dropped remarkably to 882 million hectares and 691 million hectares respectively in 2005. However, the figure of North America remained relatively stable with only a 3-million-hectare drop. Oceania had the least number of hectares of forested land, with just about 198 million from 1990 to 2005.
