Essay & Composition Writing

Can someone critique my motivation letter for Graduate school please?

Dear Sir or Madame,

I am writing to request that you accept my application to join the Master’s Program at the Glendon School of Public and International Affairs.
I am excited by the prospect of studying at such a prestigious institution and Canada’s first bilingual graduate school of public and international affairs. Over the past year I have extensively researched various graduate programs in my field and concluded that Glendon offers a unique education unrivaled by other institutions. As a French speaker I am enthusiastic about the possibility of studying in a truly bilingual environment that will prepare me for a leadership role in Canadian public life and international affairs. I also find appealing Glendon’s faculty members whose expertise in various areas and contacts with leading public figures allow students to broaden their horizons and gain access to some of the brightest minds from all levels of government.
I aspire to become well-versed in both public policy and international relations and gain the experience necessary to achieve my career goal of obtaining a position in the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and, eventually, representing Canada in NATO, the UN or other international organizations. I believe that studying at the Glendon School of Public and International Affairs will help me reach this goal because it broadly examines both Canadian public institutions and the international environments in which they function. Another reason I chose this program over others is that I highly value the opportunity to participate in the summer internship program and gain experience working with a governmental or non-governmental organization.
In order to give you a better idea of who I am, I would like to elaborate upon my background, prior education and research experience. My interest in human rights and international affairs was sparked by the oppression my family experienced when living in the Soviet Union, which led to our immigration to Canada. Upon arrival I was sent to a French immersion school and, as a result, am now fluent in three languages: English, Russian and French. After High School I started my Bachelors education at the University of Toronto, where I specialized in International Relations with minors in History and French, and will be graduating this summer with honors.
At U of T I participated in a variety of extracurricular organizations and gained valuable experience in the field of International Affairs, which will help me should I be accepted at Glendon. In my first year I was fortunate enough to be appointed Compliance Analyst at the G8/G20 Research Group and have since spent five years writing in-depth reports that were academically published and presented at the yearly G8 summits. The purpose of these reports is to evaluate and grade whether G8 member states are following through on commitments made at previous G8 summits. In the last few years I have been accepted into the International Relations Society and the Canadian Center for the Responsibility to Protect where I have coordinated two conferences labeled “Ten Years After the ICISS: Reflections for the Past and Future of the R2P” and “Facets of Terrorism: Assessing the Globalization of Vulnerability”, both of which took place at the Munk School of International Affairs. Last but not least, I was recently accepted into the Institute for the Research of Genocide Canada as an investigative analyst where I am currently researching and writing an investigative report that will be an academically published about the mass Genocide at Prejedor, Bosnia & Herzogovina.

In summary I am a very ambitious individual and confident that my prior education and extensive research experience has prepared me for the challenging nature of this program. I genuinely believe that Glendon can offer me the best education and opportunities to advance in Public and International Affairs. Due to my enthusiasm and determination Glendon is the only graduate school I am applying to. I hope that you accept my application and give me a chance to prove myself, so that I can one day represent Glendon as a graduate when I will be working in a productive role in the field of public affairs and international relations.
