Can someone check these sentences, please?

Can someone check the following sentences and let me know if I need to put commas before the highlighted words, please?

1) I am keen to pursue a career in engineering and the advertised position would offer me the perfect opportunity for career progression.

2) I am proficient in MS Word, Excel and Powerpoint and I pick up new skills easily.

My reason for not including commas before "and" is because I think the reader will easily understand what the sentences will mean.

I understand there are many schools of thought, but am I actually wrong not to use commas in the examples above, or is using commas in the those cases a matter of preference?

Thank you so much!

1) I am keen to pursue a career in engineering , and the advertised position would offer me the perfect opportunity for career advancement . 2) I am proficient in MS Word, Excel (,) and Powerpoint , and I pick up new skills easily. According to most style manuals, you are wrong to omit commas from between the clauses of a compound sentence (which both of those are), and in addition, if you wish to be clear, I think you should use them here anyway.

Thank you so much for correcting my sentences.

I found this sentence online:

"'An Introduction to Journalism' contains a heady mix of the historical; the practical; the legal and the ethical and I cannot recommend it highly enough to aspiring journalists".

The sentence was written by a senior editor at a well-known media organisation. Should they have put a comma after "

Oh, it is really badly punctuated. The editor should be demoted.
