William Shakespeare was an English actor, poet, playwright, master of drama, and the most famous writer in the English literature. There is no other writer whose plays have been produced and read so many times. He was born in 1565 and he died on April 23 in 1616. His 36 plays and 154 sonnets included rich language, complex characters and essential themes. Despite his works are about 400 years old; they remain relevant in the 21th century.

One of the reasons that Shakespeare’s plays are still relevant is because they included timeless themes like: war, conflict, jealousy, ambition, magic, leadership, power, family and love. These themes Shakespeare put in his plays appeal to many different types of audiences, such those who love romance, those who love comedy or those who love blood and violence. Shakespeare’s plays still influenced some great songs and movies of our time. “There are so many stories that are based off the plot lines of Shakespeare. I think those stories would have eventually been told, but I think it just strengthens the original. It’s sort of an homage to the original and yet telling it in a new way that people can understand in newer terms.” Dr. Warren Jones [1], chair of liberal arts at EFSC, said. For example “the lion king” is based of Shakespeare’s play “hamlet”. But also the movies “10 things I hate about you”, “She’s the men”, “west side story” and much more movies are based on Shakespeare plays [2]. The reason so many movies are based on storylines of Shakespeare is because they appeal to a great audiences and are about recognizable subjects. That makes the themes in Shakespeare’s plays universal and still relevant nowadays.

Not only the themes, but also the characters Shakespeare used make his plays relevant. His characters are human and identifiable. He gave his characters flaws and imperfections, even the lead actor, something many playwrights didn’t do. By the use of his recognizable characters he was able to mirror the problems of the world in his plays. Those problems are still occurring in today’s society. Shakespeare’s ideas and characters are so timeless that they are still being recreated in modern plays. One great example is the play “kings of war” produced by the Belgian director Ivo van Hoven. He combined five plays of Shakespeare to one big play with fourteen actors and 35 different roles. The play had its premiere in June 2015. The producer Ivo van Hove himself said this about Shakespeare: [3] “Shakespeare is unequalled in his portrayal of leadership and power. He gives us kings of flesh and blood, who must constantly weigh the interests of their country and subjects against their own. It is inspiring to discover Shakespeare as a contemporary who is dealing with the type of events we see on the news every day: the dark machinations of the people in power and the violence that their decisions bring about”. The play was an huge success and had great reviews, which all led to the same conclusion: Shakespeare is still relevant. This play is the evidence that Shakespeare’s characters are still up to date and important in nowadays society.

The last reason why Shakespeare is still relevant is because he is the basis of the English grammar and he chanced the English language forever. Shakespeare invents a lot of words and phrases we know in the English language. He was able to do that because the grammar and rules of English were not standardized. But once Shakespeare’s plays became popular, they helped contribute to the standardization of the English language. A lot of words Shakespeare invented were nouns changed into verbs, verbs changed into adjectives and connecting words as never before. Some examples are:[4] accommodation, aerial, amazement, apostrophe, bloody, and auspicious. He often used prefixes such as ‘un’ and ‘arch’ to connect words. ‘Unconfortable’ is an example of that, it first appeal in Romeo and Juliet[5]: “Capulet: despised, distressed, hatted, martyr’d, kill’d! Uncomfortable time, why camest thou now to murder, murder our solemnity?” In total he added around 1700 words to the English language and a lot of famous phrases like: [6] ”to be or not to be - that’s the question”, [7] “All that glitters isn’t gold”, [8] “as dead as a doornail” and there’re more. Without Shakespeare the English language wouldn’t be what it is today, that’s why he’s so important and relevant.

So William Shakespeare’s works include contemporary themes and characters, which are struggling with the same problems as we see nowadays. Beside his modern storylines, plays, poetry and deep understanding of human behaviour, he also had a massive influence in today’s movies, music, literature and language. This makes him the most important playwright and poet of his time, this time and even for the future. So his work is still relevant and will be relevant for a long time.
