Thanks Introduction King Richard III was born on the 2nd October 1452. He succeeded in the throne after overthrowing his nephew King Edward IV. There has been controversy on the subject of King Richard III. Some people view Richard as an “evil” king who abused his power, inflicting ridiculous orders on his people. Other people see him as a leader who would do anything for his country. His existence as a king had caused tensions within the royal family, as outlined below.
The Plantagenets The Plantagenets, predecessor to the Tudors, ruled England from 1154 to 1399. The word ‘Plantagenet’ is a nickname of the family that was adopted as a surname. Geoffroy de Plantagenet, while riding into battle in France stuck a piece of blossoming broome into his hat facilitating identification by his soldiers. Broome "Plantagenet in French" is a yellow, flowered cluster blooming in the spring and growing wild in France and England.
The war of the roses The Wars of the Roses was a civil war of the Roses, a civil war in England. This was a conflict among members in the English Royal family for the throne of England. This dispute lasted for 32 years, starting from 1455 until 1487 between the House of Lancaster and the House of York who were both related to Edward III. The name ‘Wars of the Roses’ derives from the emblems used by the two sides, the red rose for the Lancastrians and the white rose for the Yorkists. There were several factors that fueled the conflict between the 2 Royal Houses. These were that both houses were in some way connected to King Edward III, the current ruler holding power is unpopular with the nobles and population, the fact that both houses have powerful armies, and the incompetence of King Henry VI, due to a mental illness. The War of the Roses ended when Henry Tudor, a Lancastrian, defeated King Richard III at the battle of Bosworth Field in 1485. Henry Tudor became King Henry Vll. Henry Vll (representing the Lancaster family) married Elizabeth of York (representing the York family). This marriage united the two families. Henry created the Tudor rose, conjoining the White Rose of York and the Red Rose of Lancaster.
Richard III Also known as Richard Plantagenet, Duke of Gloucester, Richard III was born on the October 2 1452.He was king of England beginning 1483 when he seized the throne of Edward V, his nephew. He viewed himself to be a person committed to justice and good moral. He was in power until his death in battle of Bosworth Field between King Henry VII. He was officially the last King from the House of York and the last Plantagenet King. When he died, the war of the roses also concluded.
He was unpopular among the British and even 500 years later, he was still remembered as being one of the most treacherous rulers of England through out English history. Richard's support was diminished by propaganda presenting him as a murderer, betrayer, tyrant, and a person who sexually abused his niece. This caused the house of York, Buckingham and Wydevilles to call on him to resign. They launched a rebellion in1483.
Henry VII, from the Royal house of Tudor used his army of French and Scottish to invade England in 1485, in which Richard III was overthrown and defeated at the Battle of Bosworth Field. He was the next person to succeed the throne.
Controversy King Richard III was also chosen by William Shakespeare, a world-renowned playwright, to be depicted in the play: The life and death of King Richard III. This play is a mix of tragedy and history. It is the longest play Shakespeare has written after Hamlet. The play is divided into 5 acts.
The story begins after a war between the House of York and the House of Lancaster in which the new monarch is King Edward IV and there is a brief period of neutrality in England. However, King Edwards Brother Richard is jealous of his authority and appears to be visibly unhappy. He plans to overthrow his brother to become the King.
He succeeds to trick Lady Anne, a noblewoman into marrying him. He also gets his brother Clarence executed and blames Edward. After Edward dies, Richard becomes a temporary ruler of England until Edward’s children grow up. He then orders the execution of the court noblemen. Next, he arranges for Edward’s wife to be executed. After imprisoning the young sons of Edward’s wife and killing them, King Richard is crowned King.
The people of England by now are afraid of him, as he has unrestricted authority to do whatever he wants. He meets Earl of Richmond, a challenger from the house of Lancaster for the Position of King, which is occupied by Richard III. Richard, viewing him as a threat, begins to strengthen his authority, but despite doing everything possible, Richard III is defeated and King Edward takes over.
The controversy about Richard III is his personality trait. He is depicted by his supporters as a very kind, loyal, and modest gentleman who is considerate of other people concerning him. This is noted by his motto ‘Loyualte binds me’ or loyalty binds me.
However, there is doubt over this view. Critics of King Richard III suggest that Richard III is an evil man, who became Head of State after overthrowing Edward V, the person who claimed the thrown legitimately and hence causing havoc among the royal family as well as the whole country in general.
Conclusion It can be seen the reign of King Richard III is a very important part in English history, however it is unclear as to whether he was a just ruler or not. There is sufficient evidence on both sides that he is or is not a corrupt ruler, and until this day, it is still unclear.
