Say NO to Smoking!
Did you know that smoking has been around for over 400 years? Millions of Americans smoke cigarettes every day and they don't care about the fact that every cigarette makes a difference in their lives. Smoking is harmful to the body and causes many illnesses or diseases. Smoking should rightfully be against the law in the United States. Even though smoking kills millions worldwide annually, the government hasn't passed a law making it illegal to smoke in the United States. If other substances such as marijuana and cocaine are illegal, why is smoking lawful? I believe smoking is hazardous and should be prohibited due to various reasons.
The major reason I think smoking should be banned is because there are serious health risks involved. The health effects from cigarettes are held responsible for an estimated 443,000 deaths each year in the United States. People who have smoked for a significant period of time will have noticeable trouble breathing and will generally be in a bad health condition. On average every cigarette takes 5 minutes of life from a person. Smoking also triples your chance of being diagnosed with cancer. Do you honestly still think smoking should be allowed in America?
Cigarettes are not only harmful to the smoker themselves, but are also harmful to the people around them. This is called second-hand smoke and it is as dangerous as smoking itself. Annually 53,000 people die from the effect of second-hand smoke. A person living with a family member who smokes has a 30% higher possibility of getting lung cancer. Second-hand smoke also has an effect on children who are forced to breathe in the smoke from a parent or sibling who smokes. Seventeen percent of lung cancer is credited to people who grew up with parents that were smokers. Children of smokers have a lower birth rate and are often less intelligent than normal. People who decide to smoke have accepted the risks of smoking, but why should others be affected by second hand smoke?
Smoking is not only affecting humans it is also affecting the earth. A cigarette contains over 4,000 chemicals that are inhaled in the body and exhaled into the atmosphere. Twenty percent of the world's population smokes, which means a lot of smoke is polluting the air. Without even counting the wrapping and packaging for cigarettes, it takes 600 million trees a year to supply the fuel needed to dry out the tobacco globally. Cigarettes don't stop within the air or our bodies, but they also affect the land. Every day thousands of cigarette butts are thrown on the ground without a second thought. They make up approximately one-fourth of all the litter across the states. These cigarettes probably won't get picked up and will end up in our rivers and lakes where fish and other animals live. If not, they will end up decaying and polluting the soil and have a negative result on our plants. Because of all these cons, I think smoking is not worth it at all.

Smoking a pack of cigarettes affects the smoker, the people around them, and the environment. Do you think that the short amount of satisfaction when smoking a cigarette is really worth risking the life of one's self and others around them? Is it worth ruining the environment? I strongly do not believe so. I believe it is time to take action against cigarettes and prevent smoking from affecting our world. Hopefully I have informed you enough to choose what I believe as the right answer. Please, help the cause and say NO to smoking!
