Can somebody please answer this?

This is not a grammar or a vocabulary question, but I would like to get the opinion from the native speakers Emotion: smile

Where does 7 stand on a scale of 10?(10 being the maximum)

Can I say above average? In an interview (entry level), would an answer of 7 (rating of technical skills) create a good impression? My skills are good and I am sure they are above average, but there are experienced people and I wanted to sound modest.

Thanks a lot!

  • It's hard to say, really, without knowing what most people would score.
  • I suppose you might say 'above average'.

Hi Clive,

It is a computer programming job and it is for an entry level candidate. The manager asked me to rate my skills on a scale of 10. I said 7 because I wanted to sound modest (i could have said 9/10 / proficient as it was an entry level job) and I am worried about my answer. I answered all the technical questions.

Thanks!

Hi,

It's your choice, really.

But I feel that a job interview is not a place to be too modest. People might just believe exactly what you say, or even see it as a lack of confidence.

I don't know where you are from. But I find that adult immigrants to Canada who come from China are often too modest about their skills, because it seems to be

Hi Clive,

I live in USA. I think you are one hundred percent right. I should have said 9/10 or simply proficient. I hope the manager does not interpret that as lack of confidence (I managed to answer all the questions though). Anyways, thanks a lot for the answer!
