Can somebody from the English speaking fraction please answer this

What is the difference between "diary" and "journal"?

One of my pals said "diaries" are meant for women and "journals" are written by men! Is that correct?

Thanks!

I agree that many (most?) American guys would be hesitant to say that they are keeping

a diary. But they would not be so embarrassed to use the word "journal." But even there,

some (many?) American males would feel that it's strictly a "female thing" to keep either a

"diary" or "journal."

When I was a girl, I once received a diary as a birthday present. It was soft-covered, pink, decorated with flowers and birds, and had a tiny lock and key. On the front was written: "Dear Diary."

My brothers never received such a gift!

Hi,

Very, very broadly speaking, a journal seems to me to be more concerned with events.

eg It seems more natural to keep a journal of your travel experiences, rather than a diary.

But as stated, no necessary gender difference.

Like Clive said, there is no official difference, but in common usage (in AmE, certainly) men will call it a journal.
