Can somebody explain what a "child support award" is?

I have researched everywhere yet to no avail,,all Google hits turned up to be a news or document RELATING to this subject but nothing explain atory of its own definition.Can anyone familiar with family law explain? Thank you!

I think the term relates to this kind of scenario.
eg
Tom fathers a child with Mary, and then abandons them both.
Mary goes to court.
The judge orders Tom to pay Mary $500 per month to support the child.
This is called a child support award, because the judge awards Mary the $500. for child support.
