Can some one help me with this sentence please

Can some one tell me the meanign of this sentence please?
From discovery of this month:
"on a looping 2-billion-mile journey".
Is this mean the distance of one way or two way.

I would say the journey was the shape of a loop (i.e. the travelling object returned to its original position after a 2-billion-mile journey, without passing through the same point twice).
