The plot of the story is poses that the values of the culture in which Tess d’Urbervilles is exposed to are very immoral. First of all Tess being a stranger in this new town she visited, needed someone who would offer her the right company which she was in dire need. Coming from a low income family, Tess is forced to move out and look for some income to help her poor family. Being the eldest daughter of peasants John and Joan, Tess is left with no option but to face the challenges of being exposed to the hard life out there. On her first encounter with Alec d’Urbervilles, Tess is exposed to the cruelty of the society’s lack of concern for the needy. Though with the knowledge that Tess came from a family that was poor, Alec went ahead to seduce Tess and took advantage of her situation. The plot of the story is advanced in the passages below. This is the first man to come in the life of this woman who gets victimized because of her social status. This society Alec lives in is portrayed as too cruel by the actions he and Angel Clare do against Tess. Alec goes ahead to victimize Tess mainly because of her beauty and the degree of her poverty. Tess’ economic status was just too tattered and this gentleman, with the knowledge of her situation, goes ahead to take an advantage in this (Hardy 65).

Several scenes in the plot of the story can be used to analyze the rotten morals of this particular society. Citing one scene from the story, Tess had gone to a fair at the Chaseborough in the company of other workers who she lived with in that village. Tess was a very hardworking woman and had gone to work that day. After sunset and darkness had covered the whole village, she was engaged in a fight with one of the ladies in that village and this gentleman accidentally comes along this situation and rescues the lady. This gentleman by the name Alec is a womanizer and takes advantage of this lady’s situation. On the ride back to the estate, Alec questions Tess why she hadn’t told him that he had angered her. The kind of reply Tess gave to him exposed her to the dangers of being harassed by Alec which indeed he did. Alec’s action of taking Tess to the woods and raping her is a clear indicator of the immorality of the society where this man lives in. The poor are actually harassed by the well off. Those with the advantage of the pockets ability have the mentality and notion that the ladies have to comply with their wicked intentions and desires just like this particular man does (Hardy 83). At the back of the mind of this man, he very well knows that Tess has the feeling that she has no power since her family is poor and she can’t do anything about it. He goes ahead to commit this crime against Tess with the assumption that she is helpless and can’t resist him. This society is too cruel because the financially stable oppress the ladies because of their economic prowess. They use the women in this society to satisfy their sexual desires (Hardy 246). After Alec infringes on Tess’ rights, she is left with no option other than going back to her home village. She is so perturbed with the atrocities that this particular man commits against her that no man can bring her love life back to life. This particular man works to trace Tess on her way home and he achieves the intention. He convinces Tess and Tess accepts to stay. Their conversation is marred by superiority complex that Alec portrays and Tess tries to shut down. There were so many unwanted sexual advances that Alec made towards Tess and in her position not to come out of this situation, Alec went ahead to commit the atrocities. The conversation the two have, really portrays the condition ladies are subjected to in this society. Men perceive ladies as inferior and can use them to gratify bodily desires and the ladies are not supposed to question this. Even though the situation was tough, Tess at last stood out to protest against the wishes of Alec as she questions him of his actions which according to the expectations of this society is unaccepted (Hardy 92).

We can say that Tess is part and parcel of society that is conscious of class and perceives the poor as having no place. The women in particular are viewed as the minority and have to be inferior to men in all the circumstances. Though this gentleman exposes Tess to many atrocities including taking away her virginity and advancing to rape her later, Tess still stands up strongly unlike the rest of the women in that society and refutes any further injustices that came across her way. The subjection of Tess to the alienation by the society after the rape which resulted to pregnancy really tormented her. Women who had illegitimate babies were shunned in this society and Tess was no exception. This resulted to the death of the baby leaving this lady wounded psychologically. We can also analyze the actions of another man which portrays the values of the society in question. This is the man who came to the life of Tess after Alec had committed all the atrocities he could during the time he was with her. This is no other than Angel Clare. This man is used by Hardy in his novel to help illustrate the victimization this lady went through and thus elaborating on the rotten morals of the society. The time this gentleman is noticed by this lady is when she was dancing in a May celebration day. She noticed that this particular gentleman was of a higher class and was elite which impressed her. Tess was really not happy with Angel after he refused to dance with her that day. On moving to the Talbothaty’s Dairy, Tess comes to meet this gentleman and they fall in love for yet another time. She noticed that Angel had a superior position in the dairy but he dressed just like the rest of the workers. His character is a bit different from Alec’s though he later mistreats Tess. He handles matters in quite a different manner. Their backgrounds are totally different and they can match at the mercies of this gentleman. He was different from Alec in dealing with matters that involved money and social class. This apprehension gives Tess anticipation that she can be acknowledged by Angel (Hardy 143).

The writer of this novel depicts Angel in such a way that we develop to suppose of him as complying with the peasants’ behavior and civilization and not viewing himself as superior than they. This gentleman was happy to interact with the workers in the dairy farm that he was working in. Clare takes Tess off her feet and the lady madly falls in love with this gentleman. This man’s actions impressed ladies in the dairy farm and majority of them fell for him but were just left to wonder whether such a man of a totally different class from theirs could marry any girl in their situation. Social status conflicts are once illustrated by hardy in his novel when this gentleman approaches his parents and informs them of his intention to marry a girl from a lower social class. His mother is opposed to the situation but finally allows her son to marry Tess. This gentleman feels convicted to reveal to Tess about his sex life before they could marry. On informing her of the unfaithfulness and immorality he had committed, Tess forgave him thinking that he could also be forgiven when she reveals hers too. Tess goes ahead to writing to Angel and tells him about what had happened during Tess encounter with Alec. Unfortunately, Angel doesn’t see the letter and they marry before this information is disseminated (Hardy 200).

The lack of concern for ladies is depicted in the action taken by Angel when he learnt of the atrocities that had been committed by Alec against the girl he was ready to marry. He calls it quits and this lady is left to wallow is despair. This was pretty bad for this lady. Angel had willingly committed immorality and Tess forgave her but on learning that Tess had been deviled, he didn’t lend a hear to her version of the story. Instead he left her and assumed that all will be well with her. Left with no option, the lady had to bear with the hard to swallow truth. In this kind of quagmire, Tess came along Alec who was the only hope left for her and this man took advantage of the situation and married the lady (Hardy 320). This inferior feeling constantly exposed Tess to all sorts of injustices and this is the main picture of the values of the society the two men, Alec and Angel, were living. As life was picking up and resuming to normal, Angel showed up and this prompted for the resurgence of the love Tess had for him. She couldn’t bear nor face the situation of being married to a man that had caused her life so much pain while the one she loved was around. This is what led to the killing of Alec by Tess through stabbing. Tess was later apprehended and convicted for murder. The action taken by Angel to leave Tess alone when he learnt that she was unclean can be attributed to the lack of self control Tess had which led to her killing of Alec. This society was wicked and took advantage of the people in the low class. Discrimination and injustice is portrayed at its highest levels as well as its consequences such as the death of Alec.
