TOPIC: Developments in technology have brought various environmental problems. Some believe that people need to live simpler lives to solve environmental problems. Others, however, believe technology is the way to solve these problems. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

People hold different views about whether technology helps solve environmental problems. While some claim that living simply can tackle environmental issues, I would contend that using technology is a better way.

On the one hand, it is understandable why some people believe that simple lifestyle can solve environmental problems. First, while modern motor vehicles emit a massive amount of carbon dioxide which is the main culprit of global warming, walking and bicycles are the two more environmentally friendly means of transportation because they do not produce traffic fumes at all. Therefore, detrimental impacts of traffic emissions on the environment can be mitigated as people walk and cycle more frequently. Second, if people lived without high-tech electrical gadgets, such as air-conditioners and refrigerators, they would cut down on their energy consumption significantly. This is because these machines consume an immense amount of electricity, which is mostly generated by fossil fuels, a harmful source of energy. Thus, environmental problems can be minimized if human’s dependence on technological appliances is limited.

On the other hand, I am of the opinion that advances in technology play a pivotal role in environmental protection. The primary reason is that in some industrial sites nowadays, thanks to the modern waste treatment methods, hazardous waste materials are being dealt with in a clean way or recycled so that they have the least practicable impacts on the environment. An excellent example of this is that the HAH factory is currently using a waste treatment system which considerably helps in disposing of waste products that are free from contaminants. Another significant reason is that with the technological advancements, it has become increasingly easier to make use of alternative sources of energy, such as hydro power and wind power, which are greener than the non-renewable ones. For instance, numerous citizens in Hanoi have recently installed solar panels to take an advantage of the heat from the sun. As a result, the over-reliance on fossil fuels, which are the precursor to global warming, has been noticeably reduced.

In conclusion, although living simple lives is beneficial to address environmental problems to some extent, I strongly believe that state-of-the-art technology provides more effective measures.
