Can salt sit?

Hi Everyone,

I'm on a roll, so here is my second question Emotion: rofl

Why can we say, 'the salt is sitting on the table,' or 'her bag sits on the chair outside?'

I know they're not perfectly expressed sentences, but they are grammatically correct, nonetheless.

One of my students said that this is not a correct sentence.
Is she right?

Thanks
CC Emotion: smile

I might not use sit in that sense, at least not very often, but there are similar examples in the Cambridge Dictionary: http://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/sit
