Can or would

One should not rely completely on first impressions, for appearances ( ) be deceiving.

a. would b. can

The answer is 'can' and I can understand that, but how about 'would'?

1. If I put 'would', is it grammatically correct? If so, what does the sentence sound like?

2. Does '... for appearances would deceive.' sound right? Meaning?

Thank you for your help in advance.
