Can it be written better?

Can you write the sentences below better?

"The current situation is sort of a crisis regarding the financial sanctions imposed by TingTing ," said the spokesman. Under these circumstances, a visit by a grand delegation is a move to demonstrate the close ties with China.

Let's pretend the name "TingTing" is a name of a country.

I think it's fine. If you are quoting the spokesman, then you don't change his words. (I would omit the word 'the' before 'close ties', though.)

Thank you.

What if it is a teenager source who is speaking a different language and not the spokesman, and the quoted remark is a quote that has been translated? Would you say using such a phrase as "sort of a something" is a sign of good writing?
