Can I use two tenses in one sentence?

can I write :' He enjoyed the practical nature of our topic on electricity and can construct a simple circuit.' ?

I am being told it should be: 'He enjoyed the practical nature of our topic on electricity and constructed a simple circuit.'

I want to say 'he is still able to construct a simple circuit ' not that he could do it in the past.

Hello, Castleclan - and welcome to English Forums. You certainly can: I ate spaghetti yesterday, I'm eating spaghetti now, and I will have spaghetti tomorrow, too. Your sentences are fine, both of them, with the difference in meaning that you mention.
