Can I use "to summarize" to end a paragraph?

Phrases like "altogether", "to summarize", "in conclusion"; can these be used to conclude a paragraph? I am not sure the appropriacy of this, since I have always used them to conclude an essay.

Well, 'altogether' is not right in any case, but the others can be used. The problem is that they are not the best style; they are rather ham-handed. A good conclusion should make itself evident to the reader by its content and construction, not by a big sign announcing it.

Thank you, Mister Micawber! Yes, I realized that those phrases that I posted are overused. I will try to find other phrases. Thanks again for your help.
