Can I use the word "greetings" as this

I was wondering if I can use "greetings" (in a written form) in the same meaning as if I said "hello";
for example:

"Greetings (to you), Mr. Smith."

Also, if it's possible to use; does it sound rather formal? Who would I address like this?

Thank you for the reply.

Hi, I can't think of any situations in which that would be a natural thing to write. Dear Mr Smith is the normal way to start. Clive

Hi,

But does it make any sense (even if it wasn't completely natural)? Let's say, in some "comic" situation...
I just wasn't able to find out if "greetings" solely represents the set of greetings/regards/salutations, or if it actually can make a sense as this.

Hi,

I suppose it could be a comic kind of thing to say to a close friend.
