Can I use the subjunctive mood in this sentence?

I'm a bit confused as to whether I can use the subjunctive mood in this sentence to indicate an unreal comparison. Could you please tell me if I am using the mood correctly here?

She gently picked the child up, as if she was/were holding a beautiful, fragile bird, and carried him to the field.

Can I use "were" here?
