Can I use "group" to substitute "grouping" without changing the meaning of the definition?

Context:

hierarchy ['hai?,r?:ki]
n.
1.
a series of ordered groupings of people or things within a system

My dictionary tells me that grouping and group share the same meaning:

grouping ['gru:pi?]
n.
1.
any number of entities (members) considered as a unit
group [gru:p]
n.
1.
any number of entities (members) considered as a unit
