Can I use "and" or "but" to start a sentence?

My teacher told me never to use "and" or "but" at the beginning of a sentence, but I have found such examples in native newspapers or essays. Why?

You can certainly use conjunctions (especially coordinating conjunctions) to start sentences. A conjunction at the beginning of a sentence adds weight and emphasis, so you shouldn't be starting every sentence with one, but you can do so infrequently.

I agree with CSnyder. But (!), some teachers still seem to believe that beginning a sentence with these words is incorrect. So, I suggest you avoid the practice if you have such a teacher.
