Can I use all forms?

I have a problem with "a total of". I don't know if I can use the singular and the plural form of the following sentences:

A total of one million euros was donated.

A total of one million euros were donated.

And:

A total of 1000 tickets was sold.

A total of 1000 tickets were sold.

Are both forms of every sentence correct?

Thank you in advance.
