Can I start a new sentence with therefore?

More effort is put into marriage, while legally declaring common-law relationship seems to involve little effort and commitment. Therefore, marriage must be rewarded with legal benefits.

Some say no and others say yes. I'm worried it would be a "no" in my case, because the sentence "Therefore, marriage must be rewarded with legal benefits." seems too short.
