Can I say something like this?

Hello, Honourable Teachers!

I have doubts about my sentence. It's quite simple but not for me: "We heard the train passing by". Is this ok? Or I had to put "was passing"?

If you heard the sound of the train, then use the sentence you wrote.

If people told you about the train, the say "We heard the train was passing by." This one means that you heard from other people about the train.
