Can I say "I am sleeping"?

Is it practically wrong to say "I am sleeping" because when I am not conscious I will not say this?

Or is it also okay for it to mean that "I'm going to bed right now" or when I'm woken up by a phone call and I tell the other side that I am sleeping now?
