Can I say "Farewell." when I expect to see again?

My friend told me that farewell is what you say to someone who you don't expect to see again.

No. It's the same as "Good-bye" except that it's very old-fashioned and nobody says it anymore.

You're more likely to see it in a novel written a long time ago than anywhere else.
