Hello, You will occasionally see the 'Dear Editor/other job title format on sales letters that are being sent out to large numbers of companies, but it is not ideal, and certainly not suitable for a personal letter. Im am a bit confused here as I think perhaps the name order may be different to that which I am used to. In the west we list given names first then the surname/family name, and I have dealt with it in that way.

  • The rules may be different in China but here's how you would deal with writing to someone in the west: Dear Wong Tai Man, - This is ok (assuming Wong is given name, and Tai Man is surname).

A profile:

Surname/family name: Wong

Given name: Tai Man

First name: Benny

For formal letter,
Dear Mr Wong (family name)
Dear Wong Tai Man (Whole name)
Dear T.M. Wong (Initials and surname)

For informal letter,
Dear Be

Nearly there. They are all ok apart from Mr Wong Tai Man. We list given names then family name, so it should be Mr Tai Man Wong.

You have got the hang of the initials, they are indeed the first letters of the given names.

Thank you for your clear interpretation.

I know that before the receipient address,we need to write the recipient name but i am not sure what "format" can i write? e.g The editor, Mr Wong, Wong Tai Man etc.
