I know that for some words they can be used in phrases and those phrases can function on its own. My question is whether or not we can put something extra like adjectives to liven up the words like these.

TAKE ON
If you take (straight) on a wrestler in a wrestlling match, you are mostly likely to lose.
IN TANDEM
If something happens in (nice) tandem, ...
