Can I omit 'for'?

Hi, can anyone tell if the sentences below are correct without 'for'? And why or why not?

I was also wondering if it had anything to do with formality. Thanks for the help.

The oldest cat lived for 36 years and one day.

But the oldest dog lived for only 29 years and 5 months.

Hi, They are all correct with or without 'for'. But usually 'for' is used in both formal and informal contexts. Omitting it sounds somewhat literary and formal.
