Letter Writing

Can I get some feedback on the beginning of this reflection letter?

Dear English 900 Committee Members:

I have learned a great deal of valuable information in my English 900 class that I can use throughout my life. As a first year college student I take my classes very seriously, especially English 900. My goal is to become a registered nurse. I am aware that both verbal and written communication skills are equally important in this field. I can’t think of one profession that does not use written English as a basis of communication. Thus, it is imperative that people have a clear understanding of proper English.

This class has helped me correct some of my most prevalent writing mistakes; however, there is still much room for improvement. One of my strengths in writing is providing context. Writing the analytical essays prompted me to describe events and ideas with emphasis on detail. I used to overlook minor details, but now I am aware of their importance in analytical essays. This class has also strengthened the way I write my thesis statements. My instructor provided the class with multiple examples of them throughout the semester. It was helpful to fully understand the components of a thesis statement, and the purpose it serves in writing.

My process of writing has changed in many ways since the beginning of the semester. I used to spend more time writing than on my outlines. Now, I spend more than half of the time brainstorming and outlining. Doing this has helped me present my ideas in a unified manner. By reviewing my initial outline, I am able to determine the structure of my writing in a logical fashion. It also makes changing ideas easier than having to rewrite my paper. Another difference I’ve noticed in the way I write is how I look at sentences. I pay more attention to the overall structure of my sentences. I look at things like run-on sentences, fragmented sentences, grammar, and punctuation. I also consider moving them around if it makes more sense to do so. I repeat this process with my paragraphs.
