Can I combine these two sentences with a comma and coordinating conjunction?

Can I combine two complex sentences in this way?

1.) [dependent clause , independent clause] [, subordinating conjunction] [dependent clause, independent clause.]

Here's a written sentence if that helps, and I'm asking the same thing as above. Can these two complex sentences be combined in this way?

2.) When the teacher entered the room, the students stopped talking, but when the teacher turned his back on his students, the chatting resumed.

I wrote a sentence earlier with this type of structure, but I'm not sure if it was correct because I always thought a comma and coordinating conjunction joined only independent clauses. The reason for my uncertainty is due to the first half of the sentence ending with a independent clause and being joined to the second half that begins with a dependent clause.

Sorry, I don't know why my post came out in one paragraph like this because it's not the way I wrote it.

Yes, I do mean coordinating conjunction. Sorry, that was a typo.
