Can I also use another form?

I've read the following sentence in a book:

His red stringy hair fell over a face which was covered in pimples the size of apples.

I can also say: "...which was covered with pimples the size of apples.", can't I?

Where is the difference between the two possibilities?

Thank you in advance!

  • "With" is more like a uniform covering.
  • You could say that after you sprayed for roaches, the floor was covered in bodies, but it would not be covered with them.
  • His pimples can go either way, I guess, but normally there is skin between them, and that is what the writer is trying to convey.
