Can help me understand this verse :)

Hi guys,

I have a verse for one of my students in a speech competition and I'm having trouble understanding the meaning. Here is the verse:

An Apple a Day

An apple a day,
Sends the doctor away.

Apple in the morning,
Doctor's warning.

Roast apple at night,
Starves the doctor outright.

Eat an apple going to bed,
Knock the doctor on the head.

Three each day,
seven days a week ruddy apple, ruddy cheek.

Basically, I think the verse is saying that eating apples is healthy so no need to see doctors. I sure about lines 1-9 but I'm having problem understanding the last line.

Is the speaker saying that apples every day, every week and it is gets boring eating apples and he/she is getting fed up of apples?

This verse is for a young child and I sure 'ruddy' is a swear word. Go figure Emotion: smile

Thanks for your time

Hello Pete, The first couplet states the general case: a single apple per day is enough to keep you healthy. You will no longer need the doctor. The next three couplets give more detail about the fate of your doctor, if you take up a rigorous apple-eating regime.

  • So if you eat an apple in the morning, it is a sign of things to come: the doctor should look for alternative employment.
  • If, additionally, you eat a roast apple at night, your doctor (if he has not heeded the warning) will begin to starve from lack of income.
